CONCORD – President Barack Obama has issued a proclamation ordering flags on all public buildings and grounds to half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day on Thursday, May 15, 2014, and Governor Hassan has directed that flags remain at half-staff in honor of fallen Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell through the day of his funeral.
Governor Hassan has also proclaimed May 15 through May 21, 2014, as Law Enforcement Memorial Week in the State of New Hampshire and directed flags to half-staff for the New Hampshire Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Ceremony on Monday, May 19.
"Peace Officers Memorial Day will be particularly difficult in New Hampshire this year as we mourn the tragic loss of Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell," Governor Hassan said. "Whenever one of our law enforcement officials makes the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, it cuts through the very fabric of our society. As we mark these solemn occasions, we honor Officer Arkell and all of the fallen heroes who put their lives on the line to protect ours. Though there is nothing that we can do to ease the pain of their loss, we will continue to come together and do everything that we can to support their families, loved ones and fellow officers."
